Canes Rising: Baby Steps

After the bad breaks of early season we seem to be catching teams at the right time. Duke when E. Riley was hurt now Wake without Swank. Duke by the way bounced back and beat Vandy this week, so obviously that win was pretty big.

I agree today we lucked into a win. I still would like some sort of statement from the staff as to why J. Harris played in the second half.

Critical drops continue to haunt us.

Happy with the win but saw UVa today against GT and they look scary good right now.

Our special teams has improved a lot. I still don't think it is where it needs to be. I'm not sold on the coordinator still. I think Shannon getting more involved has helped but he shouldn't have to. We are getting some really nice returns every game now. We try onside kicks and take some chances. So, I think Shannon is starting to see the importance more. We had a field goal tipped today....so that is good..but teams like UF get blocks consistently. Teams like UNC are always getting blocks. Game changers.

Seems as though Ryan Hill made a smooth transition to safety. He's easily the best tackler in the secondary (not saying much, but still), and an ace on special teams. Wasn't he a corner in high school?

So Nix is on the sidelines and I just don't get it how he does not put in James on that 4th and one. Cooper is not a short yardage back. I know James is still not 100% but we should be able to count on him for 1 yard. I honestly believe that Nix has no clue how to utilize our player personnel. Gtech was a perfect example. He and Gailey never used Calvin Johnson effectively. The guy was the best talent that school ever had and they under utilized him.

A win is a win but all those missed tackles on the screen to Boldin has me thinking that every team going forward is going to run that play trying to hit us in a blitz knowing our corners cannot wrap up.

We could easily be 7-1 or easily be 2-6. this teams identity changes from game to game and no one seems to be consistent yet. Playing with freshmen was always going to be a roller coaster but this has been some ride.

The hit on Shields by the Wake player was as dirty as it gets.

Honestly the QB situation is putting a bit of a damper on all these wins.

Why was Harris put in later in the 4th quarter? Is it true that Nix has to create two different playbooks for the two different QBs? Is this why his offense is so predictable at times because he's having to do twice the work, and doesn't have any wrinkles? These questions all need to be answered.

The game plan by WF was surprising. Playing smash mouth football worked for the first half, but they didn't adjust after miami adjusted their defense. I expected a significant play action pass attack in the second half but it never came. On the other hand, I do think the Canes put decent pressure on Skinner and didn't have any real breakdowns except for the dump off to Boldin.

I don't believe in lessening the game because Swank was still injured. Every team goes though injuries - its just a big part of the game in college/professional football. Good teams are just that and can adjust given time. If you're going to diminish this victory because of Swank, then this site should be consistent and call FSU's victory over VATech a fluke. VATech lost their top 2 quarterbacks in the the game and had to resort to a player that only practices as a wide receiver. How much does this lessen FSU's victory ?
