I ended up voting for i'll follow b-ball after football ends which in reality means this tuesday vs ohio state!

a good poll other than throwing in baseball. college baseball is a niche sport which the media rightly does not cover the way they cover football or basketball. who watched the college world series anyhow?

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

Great response. Could not have said it better myself, Eric.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

This response is so vile and hateful I don't know where to start. I'll skip your obvious hateful rant and address the three coaches you mention. Houston Nutt is good coach who drove away message board favorite Gus Mazlhlin (sp?) from Arkansas so I doubt he'd get much love from the folks bashing Shannon. Stoops and Leach would both have been insulting hires to most die in the wool longtime Canes fans and thankfully neither was picked even though Dee seemed to like both. Dr. Shalala in her wisdom knew what was best for the program and made the right choice.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

Kartik do not worry about the negativity. My take is simple. The best way to improve this offense is to give the players some consistancy in the coaching staff. If they were to fire Nix, guess what? Now you have to learn an entirely new system and your freshmen QBs are essentially freshmen all over again, not to mention that they signed on with Miami in expectation of working with Nix. So if you are a afraid of having guys transfer, go back and re-read what Marve was saying during his recruitment to Miami concerning Nix and you should be able to put 2 and 2 together pretty easily. No Nix = No Marve. The offense just needs time, mainly because the players running it need time. I don't think they should give any serious consideration to any changes to this staff for at least another 2 years, barring any unforeseen catastrophies. This offense has had freshmen across the board at the skill positions outside of the RBs. Not to mention they're among the higher scoring offenses in the ACC. I believe they're somewhere in the range of 28 PPG. Too many fans are just unrealistic and foolishly impatient when it comes to coahes. They seem to think like Al Davis does, and believe that they could plug just about anyone into the position and see immediate results. They have no concept of consistancy and no patience. Instead they expect that a team full of freshmen and largely incompetent upperclassmen ought to just steam roll through the ACC and easily put up 35 PPG. The earliest you can expect to see Nix running his offense the way he has always intended to run it would be over the next 2 years, when he's actually got a group of guys he recruited in here to run it. The lack of patience and football IQ in the Cane Nation is beyond scary.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

GREAT POST!

SHANNON HAS DONE MORE WITH LESS THAN COKER AND DAVIS WHO DID LESS WITH MORE. YES WE WON A TITLE UNDER COKER, BUT BUTCH SCREWED 2000 UP NOT UNDERSTANDING THE BCS AND COKER SCREWED 2002 UP BY NOT BLOWING OUT OHIO STATE. LET US RECALL THAT BUTCH FOUND CREATIVE WAYS TO LOSE THE VERY SAME KIND OF GAMES THAT SHANNON HAS WON US THIS YEAR.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT UNLESS YOU VISIT GRASSY OR CANES SPORT. THERE YOU'D THINK WE WERE IN THE SAME POSITION AS TENNESSEE OR MICHIGAN.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

I am not ready to give up on Shannon but somehow I feel that Young is incapable of communicating his defensive schemes to these young players; call it generational, whatever, I simply can't believe a Defensive Coach doesn't know how to stop the option. If there was a question why didn't Shannon simply call Jimmy Johnson and get him up there for a week or so to teach the guys what was routine for him: stopping the option and the wishbone. I know GT used a "triple option" but the solution remains very much the same and the kids on the field didn't have a clue.
It wasn't for any lack of effort, they just were very rarely in the right place to stop the play and then they got frustrated and discouraged.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

Shannon has done a poor job this year.

North Carolina: Could not close out the game

FSU: Totally unprepared.

UCF: Outplayed by one of the worst teams in the nation

GT: Had all week to scout and prepare for the option yet we had a deer in the headlights look.

In addition Shannon insists on starting guys clearly not up to snuff. He keeps starting Marve, started K. Jones earlier in the year and is playing R. Davis when the guy should have lost his scholarship a few years ago!

How can you say he's one of the best coaches in the ACC? He cannot even string together a few words to explain his decisions and is totally unaccountable.

Shalala made a political decision to hire him and toadies like you feel it necceasry two years later to defend the choice.

We could have had Leach. HE WANTED THE JOB! We could have gone after Mike Stoops or even Houston Nutt and the job he's doing at Ole Miss.

Pat Nix is a horrible OC and Young is a retread DC.

I'd keep going but I realize this post it just part of an agenda by you to defend and promote Shannon.

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

Why does Michael Barrow get a free pass? The LB's are constantely out of position, the majority of the time they try and tackle high and not one of them can cover a TE or RB running a route. Heck, he couldnt get the #1 ranked LB onto the field except for special teams. A good miami player doesnt always translate into a good miami coach. Case in point: Greg Mark. Shannon hired his staff based on recruiting with Nix, Barrow, Hurtt, Hill etc. We need some real position coaches here!

Re: Canes "Motivated" for Meaningless Game

I agree: for Randy and company to take this team from 5-7 last year, and a 2-3 start this year, to a shot at the ACCCG means that we will have opportunities to win the ACC. As long as the talent keeps coming in, when these recruits are sophomores and juniors...watch out.
