Canes Rising: Give Shannon Time: Patience Required

  • Caniac · 1 year ago
So we are suppossed to endure 4-8 and 5-7 until 2011?

I'm shocked that someone who has been so critical and correct in his assesment of this team is supporting Shannon. Actually beyond shocked.

You did support Haith though and wrote that sappy "we're so close" column for All Canes when we finished 12-20 and last in the ACC, so I guess anything is possible. Looking back in the archives when we missed the NCAAs by a hair you talked about how bad we were. So I guess maybe you talk about how bad we are going to be because you somehow like it. Haith was a winner at 12-20 but loser for making the NIT. Shannon is the answer at 7-10 but we were losers in Coker's next to last year at 9-2.

Like everyone else you have a clear agenda. Too bad you are right so often given this realization.

    4-8, 5-7? More like 3-9 or 2-10. Miami sucks!
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
No agenda here, just the way I see things. I'm actually fairly consistent. I said before last season this was a 4-8 team. While I get upset, emotional and angry at and immediately after the games when I take a step back I realize the team is actually perhaps better than I thought they'd be at this point. Miami is 3-12 in its last 15 ACC games going back to the Larry Coker era. Two of the wins were versus teams Miami has played for years, FSU and BC and one win was against Duke. What that tells me is that this rot where Miami could not beat the likes of North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Virginia, etc began under Coker. Somehow Shannon is supposed to flip a switch and change things? C'mon you know more than that.
  • FIRE SHANNON, NIX, YOUNG NOW · 1 year ago
Some coaches like Saban can win with 4-8 caliber talent. Shannon isn't one of those guys because he isn't a good coach.

Butch Davis wasn't a good coach either. So he loaded us up in recruiting, but he took a team that had played for the national title the previous year and got blown out at UCLA and FSU right away. So comparing Shannon with him is cherry picking. He sucked too!
  • Jay · 1 year ago
    Well said.

    This needed to be said.

    Kudos to you.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
    Thanks.
  • Tim Canes · 1 year ago
    Some very good points here.

Let me take it even a step further.

LSU, Texas, USC, Penn St, Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma and now Michigan. All these teams have had to rebuild and take their lumps. Some schools did it right like Penn State sticking with coaches, others like Nebraska panicked, fired Solich hired the wrong guy and are now 5-6 years deep into misery. Either we stay the course or risk falling off the face of the earth entirely. OU fired Gary Gibbs despite cleaning up the program and winning 6-7 games every year and then the program literally collapsed until Stoops came in.

Too much talent and too much mystique still exist here for Miami to ever be irrelevant. We will be back. It takes time.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
A point I actually intended to make but forgot. Thanks Tim Canes!
  • We Suck · 1 year ago
This reads like a "please support us" fundraising letter from a team that is losing every game.

Oh yeah that team would be the Canes.

Kartik, as for you this is a new low. Simply pathetic.

Hiring a head coach who had no experience and no business ever coaching is one thing. To continue to defend him is almost criminal. Butch Davis? How could you compare Shannon to him? Butch had so much more coaching experience than Shannon. What a pathetic comparison.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
Butch Davis had never been a Head Coach at ANY level when Miami hired him after Sonny Lubick turned us down and Jim Tressel backed out at the last moment. Shannon is already a better game manager than Davis was in year five.

This entire post was classic b/s and spin until the part about the Dolphins and that was absolutely classic! GO BUCS!
  • POED · 1 year ago
    The Bucs are losers.

    2 Super Bowls to 1.

    Catch up or SHUT UP!
  • jfbannister · 1 year ago
I will have patience, so long as he stops putting Jacory Harris in and disrupting the offensive flow.

Is that fair? I think so.

I am sick and tired of having the offense sputter with Harris with Marve handling them so well.

Also (this may not be Shannon -- CHRIST I HOPE IT ISN'T), first-and-goal and all the offense can manage is a field goal?!?!

Something needs to change. Like, leave Harris out for an entire game and get some sort of 3- or 4- or 5-wide situation in goal-line offense -- just to shake things up.
  • Jeff T · 1 year ago
I agree with Jorge. I believe Shannon is doing things the right way, but seriously this J. Harris thing has arguably cost us the last two games. Sure we've gotten FGs on drives that likely would have been TD drives with Marve. The whole flow is disrupted, and you essentially spot the opponent points.

I cannot understand why Shannon does this. I don't like losing but I see signs of us turning it around as you state except this Harris thing.

Seriously, I think Harris playing every game does mean Shannon should lose his job. You're either going to make a decision as to who your guy is or not. If you cannot you are not a leader and should not be coaching.
  • Canes in 08 · 1 year ago
    I agree with Jorge.

Shannon has probably cost us the best shot to win the last two games with this stupid QB switch. He always does it in the 2nd quarter and it always seems to be at a critical time. We got away with it against Texas A&M, but recall there too we had to settle for a FG. The last two games we've gotten the ball in great field position after a roughing the kicker and an awesome kick return and both times he's looked like a HS QB. Even when he completes a pass it is simply because Nix called a play so safe he couldn't mess it. The one time Nix tried to do something different with him he threw an awful INT.

    I hope he transfers.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
Jorge, I agree. My biggest problem right now with Shannon is the whole Harris thing. My only caveat on saying that is maybe he needs to play him to keep the NW contingent including Spence, A. Johnson, etc happy.
  • FIRE SHANNON, NIX, YOUNG NOW · 1 year ago
You people act like Marve is actually good.

Did you see how much air he put under the ball the other day? I don't care how he played against Texas A&M. Against FSU and UF he threw 0 TDs and like 3 INTS, and had like 5 other sure INTS dropped.
  • FIRE SHANNON, NIX, YOUNG NOW · 1 year ago
Riley Skinner is gonna' SHRED this team - Wake kills us by 25+.

Tyrod Taylor is gonna rin for 300 yards and throw for 200 more. We lose by 50

Same team making the same bonehead mistakes with the same incompetent donkeys trying to coach talentless, brainless players. This team (and coaching staff) is flat out BAD!!! And hasn't shown any improvement...that's the coaches!! Nix stiill sucks although he is by far the least of the evils.

Columns like this make me want to puke. Do you know what the U is about? It's about winning! I don't want to ever see these losers again!
  • POED · 1 year ago
Come join me watching the Fins!
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
I don't want to ever see these losers again!

Don't come here in the future then. We are Canes fans here not fans of "winning" like I am discovering so many UM fans actually are.
  • POED · 1 year ago
Thank you queen Donna and Donuts Dee for this hire.

We are going to be terrible for years and years.

Just wait and watch. Duke will beat us.

We are not even close to rock bottom yet.

Screw you. I have a new found interest in the Dolphins also. I'm not wasting my time watching the Canes anymore. That's a real team with a real coach.
  • Larry · 1 year ago
Don't come back when we are in the BCS in a few years punk.

You must be a Gator fan in disguise.
  • John H · 1 year ago
    He deserves time, I agree.

But the situation with Haith was different. You fail to mention we went from missing the Big East tournament in Clark's last year to sniffing the NCAAs each of Haith's first two seasons. The fire hatih crowd on Grassy were idiots who thoughts Clark was a good recruiter and that Diaz was going to be a lottery pick. One poster there even said Clark gave Haith a loaded squad, which as you point out was not true. That was based on recruiting rankings not on the actual quality of the players. The truth is Clark's classes have been ranked much higher than Haith's has. What Haith has done is recruit players who fit his system not simply athletes.

With Shannon our team has actually regressed. I like you blame it on the last few disasterous Coker classes becoming upperclassman. But the point is that the straight Haith/Shannon comparison does not work.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
Agreed to an extent. You are correct but my point is that the year Haith was saddled with the fact that Clark lost two whole classes when he left (CJ Giles, Karron Clarke, Leonard Harden) was the 2006-07 season and that was the worst year we have had since the infamous winless big east season the early 90s. But that year I saw signs and wrote as much both here and at the All Canes Blog. I was right............The Canes once cleaned out of Clark's players completely and stocked with all Haith players except A. King made the NCAAs. The same can happen if Shannon is given time. I'm not saying it will but you can't assume anything yet.

Oh how gay are we. Talking Basketball. Put me out of my misery and get me out of here!
  • Jeff T · 1 year ago
Haith inherited a better team than Shannon. Hite, Diaz, etc. Shannon inherited Wright, Freeman, etc.
  • Larry · 1 year ago
This piece is so good I'm emailing it to all my buddies.

    Great job!
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
    Thanks!
  • WL Canes · 1 year ago
Well put. I'm not giving them until 2011 like you, but I think next year will be the key season to judge.
  • jfbannister · 1 year ago
2011 is the key year, WL.

You need to read the full recruit class of a coach to see how he does.

I will be that patient, I just think they'll turn it around in less than four years -- and I'm not even drinking the Kool-Aid.
  • Canester · 1 year ago
The people who are panicking and saying they don't want to watch this team again are losers. Kartik you need to chill out to. No need to respond to trash who aren't real fans. Just ignore them instead of inciting them.
  • Sebastian · 1 year ago
We cannot afford for this to go on until 2011. You make sound points but the 2011 date is too much. 2010 at most, but really we should bottom out this year, and begin our ascent next year.
  • FIRE SHANNON · 1 year ago
RS recruited and trained these upperclassmen on D. If he had not been on the staff it would be one thing, All the Shannon shills gloss over that, but he had carte blanche over the D under Coker - he recruited how he wanted and trained his men how he wanted, so how come out secondary sucks so badly with guys that he trained covering WR's? All your examples are of coaches new to a program, not an assistant that was heavily involved in recruiting and the direction of the program.
  • LV Canes · 1 year ago
Randy has worked it out in his mind that putting togeather player packages and player rotations will insure freshness and harmony among his players.

Well quite frankly I see linebackers that are out of position to make plays on defense and quaterbacks that cant get in sink with their recievers.Defensive backs that dont know their positions.

Not to mention penalties for too many men on the field.Players and coaches calling time outs when they shouldnt be.

Coaches that dont know when to go for two point conversions...

TELL ME DOES ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON AROUND HERE!!!!!!!!! THIS IS ALL ON COACHING!
  • Go Canes 08 · 1 year ago
Who could we have gotten, that would have been better, at the same price? Keep in mind that he delivered a top 3 recruiting class, which we will not know the full effects for another 2 years. Throw in, what is shaping up as a top 10 class for next year and I'm not understanding what the complaints are. If you were to tell me that Leach, Saban, Davis, Schiano or any of the other coaches would have taken the salary we were able to offer but we chose Randy instead, than your discontentment with Randy's hire would make sense. Are all of the other coaches better than Randy? Probably, but how can you fully assess the job Randy has done when he is still working with the train wreck that Coker left behind? If Randy proves to be a crappy coach in 2 years, he is going to leave behind a load of talent for the next guy, much like Zook left for Meyer!
  • FIRE SHANNON · 1 year ago
Coker lost 9 games in 5 years. Shannon has lost 10 games in less than two years. He did have an accurate assessment after the FSU game: "We can't stop the run and we can't stop the pass." He could add, we can't run the ball and we can't pass very well.
  • J Canes · 1 year ago
i find it hard to believe mckenzie cant find playing time, not with all of the hype weve heard over the last yr and a half. anyone else think there may be more to his lack of playing time. what does randy have to lose, he needs another playmaker on the field -- just doesnt make sense to me
