Canes Rising: Nix vs Young

  • Canedave · 1 year ago
Very good performance by Jacory Harris. This is what I expect to hear from the staff this week:

Robert Marve is our quarterback. He will continue to be our quarterback. There is no QB controversy here. Both he and Jacory Harris will play.

Marve is like Kenny Kelly with all the athletic ability who has made some incredible plays.

Harris is more like Dorsey or Kosar. A safe QB who is a winner.

I choose the winner every time. Besides Marve is from Tampa just like Kelly.

I think this is Harris' team. Marve has regressed and like Kelly and the young Scott Covington he is amazingly reckless.

Yup, that's essentially what's been said

Honestly, B. Harris is a big part of the problem. He has poor technique and is woeful tackler.

    Young is a good coach.

Nix is average but certainly called a good game today!

If you hate the message boards so much why do you pay such close attention to them?

Seriously, just ignore them. Most of the people are blowhards without coherent thoughts there. I don't read that crap and neither should you.

You may be right, Canes in 08

Shannon had the foresight to play both Marve & Harris, hopefully bloggers will start to realize he knows what he's doing. This team is a few plays away from having only one loss. He deserves the credit.

Jacory plays more than a series or two and the team scores about fifty points each time. Coincidence? No the kid is an absolute winner.

Not only is his chemistry with Aladrius Johnson outstanding, but he probably will have similar chemistry with Kendall Thompkins if he were to play and next year with Tommy Streeter.

This game said alot about Harris and the Northwestern kids. Duke has been a laughing stock for years but as you point out David Cutcliffe has changed the culture up there in Durham. They wanted this game and the Miami we have come to know the last few years will give up if the other team wants it more. But the championship aura of Miami NW turned this ship around and now we have so much to look forward to.

Randy, please please please don't bring Marve back!

Marve looking for a deep ball and throwing it poorly is just part of the growing process the Hurricanes are going to have to endure with a freshman quarterback.

Harris was in the zone, but remember, he threw two interceptions as well. Not all was honky-dory -- so to speak -- with him under center. Oh, and he was the only QB to get sacked in this game for Miami. He holds on to the ball too long sometimes.

The offensive line is terrible. They can't get a good jump off the ball to get the running game going. This has to stop. NOW.

The defense is terrible. It probably wouldn't even be able to stop St. Thomas Aquinas right now.

Travis Benjamin is the MAN on special teams.

AJ is the playmaking wide receiver that this school has missed since 2004 or so.

More when I really watch the game instead of going on major highlights.

Harris really is limited in what he can do. He not very mobile even though he can execute the designed QB draw. His arm strength is almost nill. He is accurate from 0-19 yards, but honestly we cannot have him run the offense full time. The deep ball and improvising on plays that breakdown is out the window with him. As you say Jfbannister, the offensive line is terrible and putting a largely immobile pocket QB behind them is going to make matters worse in the short term. I say go back to Marve this week and give him the quick hook if he continues his bravado of bad passes down the field.

The defense is terrible plain and simple. Had Duke not dropped something like 8 passes this could have easily have been another UCLA game coming down to the last possession and finishing like that game 49-45 or the like.

Young's schemes are vanilla sometimes as you mention but also when he blitzes he tends to blitz up the middle with G. Cook or a Safety leaving the whole middle of the field open. Against good QBs like T. Lewis and R. Skinner you don't get a way with this.

Yeah and now I dins out Eron Riley was hurt and that's why he had so many drops after really looking good against Navy and Virginia. So we caught them at the right time I suppose.

While this win was important it is critical to consider the fact that Miami has not beaten what we would call an upper division ACC team since Coker's last game against BC, a game being played on Thanksgiving Night in the memory of Brian Pata. If you take that sentimental occasion out of it, Miami has not beaten a top tier ACC opponent since beating Virginia Tech in Blacksburg in November 2005, right after Hurricane Wilma.

So this week's game will tell us once in for all if this team has improved. Wake is struggling right now. Riley Skinner isn't playing the way he has the last two years, but Wake is still formidable: the top team in the ACC collectively over the last three years, having lost only four league games including yesterday in a four year period. Everytime they have been counted down before they have come back. They have the best coach in America arguably in Jim Grobe. If this really was a turning point yesterday we'll have confirmation this weekend. Otherwise it was just a tease.

Here are the facts. This team has been looking for the right combination of ballers all season long. They have been very inconsistent because the process is to find out what works. What combinations work best in all three phases of the game. It really doesn't matter if it Duke, the sisters of the poor, or Texas. We needed to figure out who the players are that work best with one another. I think that is where the optimism comes from....not necessarily that we beat Duke so lets not get that confused. Do you realize how long it has been since we have won back to back games....or an ACC game? We can't afford to be acting like this is no big deal. We have to look for things to build on. Every run starts somewhere. The NW kids know how to win. The rest of the team does not. So now we will see where we stand against Wake Forrest.

Nix has been criticized for being too conservative and I believe given the late game failures of the recent past he made the decision to continue running the offense that had taken over the game which meant going shotgun and using short crossing and underneath routes. This team has blown so many games so many different ways the past three seasons the idea of shutting it down and running the ball could have been disasterous especially with such a poor defense.

I don't think shaking up the qb's is the thing to do right now, let Marve start and if he begins to unravel then Harris steps in. It could be that Harris plays better since he can see what the defense doing while waiting to come in the game.

Amazing how a QB change can make the offensive coordinator previously deemed a fool look like a ganius.
  • Canester · 1 year ago
we are a few plays from being 6-1, IF we stopped NC or if kayne makes that catch, we beat NC,and if shields doesnt get that 12th man penalty, maybe we score the go ahead toouchdown against FSU--either way, this is the 7th and every game going into the 4th qtr that we have been in and been within 6 or winning in every game--WE HAVE CAME A long way, think about it. Every game we are improving other than the UCF game.

the routes seemed better designed as well. the coaches have been saying for awhile the recievers weren't exactly following instructions well. this group seems to be getting it done and Harris is delivering.
