Canes Rising: Not Good Enough

  • Da U · 1 year ago
UCF is not a gimme game. We should beat them but they have speed on offense and we have shown these past three weeks we clearly have trouble with QBs who are mobile.

I agree with your sentiments for the most part. I am disgusted by this team but feel the Freshman like Spence, and Benjamin are the only guys playing hard.

5-7 again? Nah, I think we can get to 6-6 looking at the schedule. Getting 7 wins is going to be nearly impossible.

The goal: win 4 games, 3 in the ACC to close out the season 6-6, 3-5 in the ACC and point things positively to the future.
  • SuperCane · 1 year ago
kartik, like last year I felt you were being negative simply to provoke reaction. However, like last season as time goes on I see almost everything you write turns to fact. now here are my facts about the rest of the season.

UCF is a pushover. but we are down and this is a huge game for them. They could beat us
Duke is a pushover - but they've played us close the past 2 years and are better this year than before. They could beat us.
WF - a pushover - but will spank us
UVA - pushover - but thumped us last year 48-0...in the last game in our house!!!!! have we really caught up a 48 point difference, plus going on the road? They spanked MD tonight. We get killed.
Vatech - down this year but by then fr RB has some experience and a running QB? Are you kidding?
GaTech - This is the ACC conference champ. We couldn't stop Ponder on the option. How are we going to stop a real option? We lose.
NCST - ok this is a pushover. We win.

so I count one sure win: NC State
two possible wins, UCF and Duke.
four more losses, wake, uva, vt, gt

look at the schedule without drinking the cool aid. the cold facts point to a 6 win ceiling max. thats if we play well, and get breaks. we need to steal a game against a superior team. maybe it has to be wake at home.
  • TampaCane · 1 year ago
SuperCane, if we are now 2-3 and you say we have one sure win and two possible wins, that would put as at 5 wins and 7 losses, where does the sixth win come in?
  • Super Cane · 1 year ago
Good point Tampa Cane. I'm so anxious to get to six wins i miss counted. Man are we in trouble.

Seriously I am not impressed by UNC beating UConn. Isn't that a basketball rivalry anyhow?

Losing games at home in conference in unforgivable. Do we really think we can go on the road and beat Virginia or Duke at this point with such a mentaly weak group of players?
  • ACC owns us · 1 year ago
U HAVE BEEN SO RIGHT ALL ALONG. POWER RATINGS, CRITICISMS ETC. YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF.

DOES ANYBODY FEEL LIKE WHEN THE CANES ARE PLAYING THEY ARE PLAYING A PICK UP FOOTBALL GAME OUT AT THE PARK OR THE STREETS?

IT JUST LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE JUST WINGING EVERYTHING NO PREPERATION, NO ADJUSTMENTS, THEY DONT USE COOP, BENJAMIN, AND EPPS ENOUGH, HE KEEPS PLAYING KHALIL JONES, SHIELDS FOR WHAT?????

HOW IN THE H** CAN YOU USE ALL YOUR TIMEOUTS AND GET CALLED FOR TOO MANY MEN IN THE HUDDLE??? NIX IS INCONSISTENT BUT SHANNON IS IN OVER HIS HEAD AND IS JUST WINGING EVERYTHING. HE NEEDS TO GO. MAYBE THIS WE DISAGREE ON, BUT WE AGREE ON EVERYTHING ELSE.
  • Canes me me cry · 1 year ago
Kartik, you giving Shannon and Nix a pass again this week?

You know what your talking about most of the time which is why I was shocked by that appauling post last week.

We came back which is great but how could the team be so unprepared to play our biggest rival at freaking home!

That's coaching. You cannot continue to blame Coker's players for everything. Saban wins with Shula's players. Meyer wins with Zook's players who by the way were losers under Zook. Shannon was a bargain basement coach $$$ wise and now that we've re-upped Haith for some crazy salary I fear we'll never rid ourselves of Shannon and cheap coordinator options like Nix. Did we really go after Koetter or was that b/s?
  • Can't Blame Nix · 1 year ago
    Canes me me cry,

how many points do we have to score to get off of Nix's back? 60? 70? 100?

Dude we scored lots of points against a top rated D. Our defense and headcoaching is the problem.
  • Tim Canes · 1 year ago
Kartik's been preaching to us for a while how bad these guys are. And he has consistently said it is because of Coker's recruits. So be patient!
  • LR · 1 year ago
Well despite the comeback losing to FSU at home is not acceptable and being mentally out done is even worse. And for all your smart prognostications on our team the last few years Kartik, haven't you said FSU's coaching staff was the worst in the country? Seriously how bad are Shannon and Young if they get totally out schemed in this game. Nix's fault lies with not running the ball more early, taking shots deep instead of establishing our identity in the game. That being said, Nix had perhaps his best half as our coordinator in the second half. I liked just about every play call but when guys drop passes Nix cannot be blamed.

Young's defense has gone to pieces. Ponder's ability to run stopped us from blitzing and that then opened the field up for them. Honestly, I cannot take this anymore. The second half of the schedule as everyone has said is tougher than what we've faced. Wake is better than FSU. GT is better than Wake. Virginia Tech as always is better than everyone in the league. If we lose at home to North Carolina and FSU, how can we expect to beat anyone with a pulse in the conference?
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
Considering the ACC is the worst major conference, this run of futility we are on is all the more unacceptable.

Bag on Coker all you want, Kartik but his last season we NEVER fell behind 24-0 or 31-0 in the first half of games. NEVER. Even with Kirby Freeman and Kyle Wright, Baby J as a freshman and horrible WRs we kept games manageable. We just made mistakes at the end against VT, GT and MD that cost us those games including dropped passes and untimely INTs. Behind Freeman we came from behind to beat BC late and knock them out of the ACC title game. Maybe they were playing for Coker that day knowing he'd be fired the next morning, but honestly that team showed me more than this group.

Our front seven is terrible other than Spence. Spencer Adkins? Are you kidding me? Stephen Wesley? These aren't Miami caliber players. What about Arthur Brown? Is he a recruiting flop? I thought only Coker had those, Kartik, not your buddy Shannon? How about DVD, another Shannon recruit? He's is awful. I mean the guy is a joke. Jo Jo Nicolas is another Shannon recruit. Is he typical Miami safety, Kartik?

I'm sorry things are worse for us than they have ever been. You've outlined that in this post but cleverly manage to avoid discussing the staff that has brought this situation. Another fun fact for you Kartik. Shannon is 1-5 all time at home in the ACC. Is that the worst ACC home record EVER for a coach who isn't at Duke?
  • ACC owns us · 1 year ago
DUDE ARE YOU GOING TO CALL OUT SHANNON AND YOUNG OR WHAT?

NIX ALSO. HE CALLED A GOOD GAME BUT THE SHUFFLING OF WRS IS SICK. KHALIL JONES? HANKERSON? SHIELDS? WHY NOT MORE BYRD OR A. JOHNSON?

NIX CAN CALL GOOD PLAYS BUT IF HE HAS THE WRONG WRS IN CHANCES ARE THEY WILL DROP THE BALL. THE CALL ON 2ND DOWN BY THE GOAL LINE WAS GREAT, BUT WHY HANKERSON AND NOT A. JOHNSON? HE'S TALL AND CAN LEAP. REALLY I'VE SEEN ENOUGH AND AM NOT GOING NEXT WEEK. WE'LL SEE IF WE BEAT DUKE AS TO WHETHER OR NOT I GO TO THE WAKE GAME. RILEY SKINNER WILL THROW FOR 300 YARDS AND RUN FOR 100 ON THIS DEFENSE.
  • Tim Canes · 1 year ago
On other quarterback scrambles, and option plays when you blitz alot, like we do, you are man for man in the secondary. For five years, quarterbacks have exploited that weakness by having the quarterbacks run. We still haven't figured out how to stop it. But give Ponder credit, he did a great job for them. But Skinner, Taylor, etc are licking their chops when they see this game film.
  • UM Hoops · 1 year ago
People used to rag on me when I'd jump on the train to see Basketball at the Miami Arena.

Now we have a major Canes website saying in the last line on a football game, bring on basketball.

    Boy, how times change!
  • Caniac Pro · 1 year ago
Those who bash Donna don't realize the strength of our overall athletic program has never been better. U mention Basketball, but Baseball is always good, and swimming, woman's soccer, etc is at an all time high.

As an urban private school that has one of the lowest undergrad enrollment numbers among D1 football programs we have to realize we have less $$$ than most other programs even in the ACC. We cna moan and bitch all we want but it is a lot cheaper to compete in Basketball and Baseball. Baseball doesn't give much exposure, but arguably the NCAA Basketball Tournament gives more exposure than Football does at any point. Now the average football game and football season are more covered by the media and have more interest than Basketball. But for three weeks every year this country drops all else and focuses on NCAA hoops. Miami made the NCAAs last year for the first time in long time. This year we are going to have a good shot to make it again and the ACC is a Basketball conference. While our entry motivated everyone to improve in football and eventually surpass us, entering the league in Basketball has elevated our program.

I love the last line, and hope the Basketball coverage on this site is as extensive as the football coverage.
  • Can't Blame Nix · 1 year ago
I don't blame Donna. I blame Dee. You say Basketball is so successful, yet we are simply returning to the point we were when he hired and then extended the contract of Perry Clark! As for Shannon he is the product of extending Coker's contract. That's on Dee.
  • Louis · 1 year ago
What pathetic defense will you have for Shannon who has lost 8 of 9 ACC games this week?

Coker was at fault not rushing more than three on all those third downs.

Damn you Coker for not wrapping up on that draw play on 3rd and a mile.

Damn you Freeman for throwing like 7 passes to the FSU defenders 5 of which were dropped.

Damn you Leggett for dropping pass after pass.

The defensive failures under Coker were all on him. We had a brilliant DC who was being reigned in by a terrible HC. Thank god we made the change we did.

We are rolling man. Shannon is a genius.
  • Lawrence · 1 year ago
McCarthy is out for the year.

You think we have any chance of 6-6?

Without McCarthy and probably Moncur also I say winning two ACC games is the ceiling.

Shannon only has himself to blame.

Young has been found out by the ACC coaches. We shot our wad so to speak against Florida and now everyone will pick us apart.

Nix had his faults too like abandoning Coop, early, etc but it's tough to blame him. The bad news is he had to unload the trick bag totally in a loss and now those plays are lost for the season.
  • kkfla737 · 1 year ago
" look at the schedule without drinking the cool aid. the cold facts point to a 6 win ceiling max. thats if we play well, and get breaks. we need to steal a game against a superior team. maybe it has to be wake at home."

    Agreed.

" Kartik, you giving Shannon and Nix a pass again this week?"

No. I'll elaborate later this week.

Bag on Coker all you want, Kartik but his last season we NEVER fell behind 24-0 or 31-0 in the first half of games. NEVER. Even with Kirby Freeman and Kyle Wright, Baby J as a freshman and horrible WRs we kept games manageable. Maybe they were playing for Coker that day knowing he'd be fired the next morning, but honestly that team showed me more than this group."

I think that season honestly was saved if you can call seven wins saved, because Wright got hurt. We did bag it early against Maryland and BC to correct you but Kirby brought us back. Olsen called plays that took advantage of his ability run which Nix never did. But really I cannot argue with you. Getting blown off the field against FSU at home in the first half has not happened since the famous 1984 game in JJ's first year and of course we had already beaten Florida and Auburn that year. Rivalry games define your program. This series has defined who we are as Canes for years. The coaching performance by Shannon and Young will be dissected later this week.

" NIX ALSO. HE CALLED A GOOD GAME BUT THE SHUFFLING OF WRS IS SICK. KHALIL JONES? HANKERSON? SHIELDS? WHY NOT MORE BYRD OR A. JOHNSON?

The shuffling of WRs started under Dan Werner and I agree has to stop.

" I love the last line, and hope the Basketball coverage on this site is as extensive as the football coverage."

We cover UM Basketball more closely than any other site on the web. Go back to the archives and look at previous seasons. We make an effort in Baseball also. Jorge our Baseball writer is fantastic.

" We are rolling man. Shannon is a genius."

Sarcasm I guess never hurts at a terrible time like this.

McCarthy is out for the year.

What? Where did you hear that?
  • Lawerence · 1 year ago
Check out Shandel Richardson's blog. Says Moncur is out for the year also.
  • Super Cane · 1 year ago
So we're officially taking the gas pipe for this year. Can they be redshirted?
  • ACC owns us · 1 year ago
Moncur + McCarthy out = giving up 41 or more points to everyone in the ACC.

Heck I'm not so sure we beat UCF next week now.

Dude, I wish I liked Basketball as much as you guys. Sounds like the Canes have a good team. Saw them vs Texas last year almost fight back and win it.
  • Can't Blame Nix · 1 year ago
Shannon I believe has forced Nix to be conservative. That's Shannon's style. Down 24 points, Nix reverted to the style he prefers and we put up some points. Marve was off and FSU's defense sort of collapsed but still I think Nix should be exempt for any blame for this game. Was he perfect? Far from it, but the blame lies with Shannon and Young.
  • REAL CANE · 1 year ago
Those of you who were not around during the probation years may not recall that we found ways to dig deep and beat conference opponents those years. We had only one losing year in the Big East, and that was a 3-4 season when we bottomed out at 5-6 in 1997. We bounced back the next year and went 5-2 and then 6-1 in 1999 before winning the league title again in 2000. The Big East was essentially the same caliber then as the ACC is now. Virginia Tech was actually better then, Syracuse very good, West Va while not as good as they have been the past few years was a bowl team just about every year, and Pitt certainly had some nice seasons also. BC made a bowl just about every year also.

Ryan Clement was limited physically but was a fighter. Once the talent was replenished we had to learn how to win which we did. Growing up takes time and to that extent Shannon gets a bit of a pass, but where he deserves blame is that he did not inherit the mess Butch did and he over inflated expectations. Last year he led people to believe this team could beat anyone, anywhere. Now look at us. We are a laughingstock and because we are Miami, don't think people will see us as Duke or Vanderbilt on their schedule. They will come out to kill us every week.
  • Super Cane · 1 year ago
Not to mention we could go on the road and beat some good teams: Syracuse in 1996, West Virginia in 1998, BC in a great comeback in 1999.

Those teams would kick the snot out of this team. Edge would run for 350 yards against this front seven! James Jackson? 100 or 150 for sure!
  • Sebastian · 1 year ago
This team doesn't have any killer instinct nor discipline. That sadly comes from coaching and isn't going to change until Shannon is shown the door.
  • Tim Canes · 1 year ago
So we should fire Shannon now?

No discipline? Shannon has whipped these kids in shape!
  • Jay · 1 year ago
Its starting to get interesting own at the U because Randy is going to have to show what kind of coach he is and can he over come adversity that he is going to have to deal with. I think he still needs more time he will turn it around soon.

    Man this pisses me off.

These are Miami kids. You know Northwestern, Booker T, etc.

These kids are all from Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

The entire f'n team is from the three county area and yet they don't defend their turf.

In the 80s and 90s guys from Dade, Broward, Palm Beach they'd have the pride not to let guys come in here.

Rod Carter, he was from Dillard in Fort Lauderdale. He told me once after a game it was about teaching the enemy from Trailerhasse and Canesville about south Florida.

I don't care that these guys are Freshman. they have lost it in my book.
  • Tim Canes · 1 year ago
The freshmen are the guys who came to play.

they are local. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Belle Glade, etc.

    we just need time.

So let me get this right. You knew this ship was going down last year yet still support it? You are a first class loser and deserve these losers.
